Ken Smith became News Director at News 5, WCYB in June of 2011. Smith is a Tennessee native who grew up in Nashville, went to college at UT Knoxville and has worked in three markets in the state.
Smith’s first job was as a producer at WBIR-TV in Knoxville where he produced the late news during his last two years in college.
After that, he worked in various producer and management roles at several stations including Executive Producer at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, NC, Executive Producer at WKRN-TV in Nashville and News Director at The Health Network, a national cable channel. In that role, he produced daily health content for the FOX News Channel and FOX affiliates nationwide. Before News 5, Smith was News Director at FOX 17 in Nashville, where he created a news department and news programming.
Smith comes to News 5 with more than 30 years of television experience which also includes producing news and sports specials and programming and as interim General Manager of a WB affiliate. During that time, he has won numerous AP Awards and eight Emmy Awards for his work.
Smith is excited about being at News 5 and looks forward to serving the Tri-Cities community. He is committed to making sure News 5 is “getting the facts” every day and giving our viewers timely, relevant and useful information that is important to them and their families. He is also very interested in weather coverage and pledges the StormTrack 5 Weather team will continue to excel in keeping you informed about severe weather in our region.
Smith is also a Regional Vice-President with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, he’s the former President of the Tennessee Associated Press Broadcaster’s Association, and has served on boards of charities serving children and adults with disabilities.
