Fat grafting becoming more common in breast reconstruction

U.S. plastic surgeons are using fat grafting techniques more and more for breast procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Fat grafting involves a plastic surgeon using liposuction to remove fat cells from one area of the patient’s body and using them to reshape the breasts.
According to the ASPS, fat grafting is more often used in breast reconstruction than cosmetic breast surgery.
Of the surgeons surveyed, most found fat grafting useful for improving the shape of the breast, according to ASPS.
Fat grafting has been debated in the past because there was concern the procedure would interfere with mammograms and make it difficult to diagnose early-stage breast cancer. However, recent studies have shown that changes to the breast from the procedure are distinguishable from any abnormalities that may be caused by cancer.
