A Florida trucker who pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment in a wreck last year that severely injured a Tennessee state trooper has been given probation.
The Knoxville News Sentinel said Knox County Criminal Court Judge Steve Sword granted 32-year-old Eric Dewayne Lewis probation Monday after Lewis pleaded guilty.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Lowell Russell wrote in a letter to Sword that he had no bad feelings toward Lewis and didn't think sending Lewis to prison would be of any value.
Lewis, of Orlando, Fla., told authorities he fell asleep after attempts to stay awake by dousing his face with water.
The 39-year-old Russell underwent months of rehabilitation after his cruiser was struck off westbound Interstate 40 by Lewis' tractor-trailer.
