Spider-Man, one of the many costumed characters who make a living off the tips they receive from tourists in New York’s Times Square, went on trial Tuesday following a quarrel with an unpaying tourist.
The Associate Press reports that Philip Williams is accused of hitting a mother of two who wanted a picture of her children with him, dressed as Spider-Man. Williams claims Victoria Goreaciuc wanted the picture, but they claimed she had no cash for a tip. Williams called her a name and the family left, but came back an hour later. Goreaciuc asked Williams why he had been vulgar earlier and then threw snow at him, which caused him to punch her in the face, a move his attorney claims was purely self defense.
The testimony indicated that another character in a Batman costume tried to intervene.
Williams faces up to 90 days in jail if he's convicted of harassment and other charges.
