The first phase of construction on the Smyth County courthouse is on schedule.
Assistant County Administrator Scott Simpson tells News 5 construction is between 50% and 60% complete.
The work underway right now should be completed in mid-May. Workers are finishing water and sewer lines in front of the courthouse, as well as building temporary holding cells for prisoners in the basement.
The jail there is scheduled to be demolished towards the end of May, and phase one of constriction should wrap up in mid to late July.
Construction on the courthouse expansion will begin in the fall, with phased renovations of the existing building taking place after that.
