JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

If you have had an airbag replaced in the past three years, you may want to have it checked.

Federal officials issued a warning today about counterfeit airbags. They say the phony airbags could fail to deploy or even injure people in a crash.

Officials say one of the fake bags exploded with metal shrapnel during testing.

We spoke with a local car dealership to find out what you can do to protect yourself. "If they're had an accident they're getting their airbags replaced, they need to make sure through their insurance company that their airbags are coming through from a reputable company," said Tim Copenhaver at Champion Chevrolet.

Copenhaver adds by buying something that is not regulated could put you and your family at risk.
