Elizabethton Police Chief Matt Bailey has resigned.
News 5 has learned he submitted his resignation to the city manager Friday morning.
On Saturday Bailey released a written satatment saying:
"First, I want to say it has been a distinct honor and privilege to have served the citizens of Elizabethton as Chief of Police. However, after much thought and consideration, I decided to ask the City Manager for a voluntary reassignment to the Patrol Division as a Patrol Captain, which he has granted. This decision is one hundred percent of my choosing; influenced by no one. This decision is based on personal reasons as well as the desire to spend more time with my family to meet my obligations with them. The succession planning we have in place within the EPD will ensure that we will continue to deliver the very best service to our citizens which they deserve. This will be effective December 30, 2012."
We're told Chief Bailey's resignation is effective as of December 30. At that time, Major Greg Workman assumed his duties.
