SMYTH COURT HOUSE
SMYTH COUNTY, Va. -

Construction crews are hard at work inside the Smyth County Courthouse.

County Engineer, Scott Simpson, says right now crews are creating temporary holding cells inside the County Courthouse for inmates traveling from the Regional Jail in Abingdon.

This project should take 6 months but this is actually a two-phase project. Soon construction will begin on the four streets surrounding the courthouse.

"That work will be water, sewer, and gas relocation. The new construction will have some traffic impacts," added Simpson.

We've learned that project will take at least 3-years. Part of the project includes tearing down the old jail.
