RICHMOND, Va. -

A new report shows fewer Virginians are getting health insurance through their employer.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation report released Thursday says 66 percent of Virginia residents got their insurance through a job in 2011. That's down from 75 percent in 2000.

In Virginia, the percentage of private sector employers offering coverage fell from 60 percent in 2000 to about 56 percent in 2011.

The rate of employees taking employee-sponsored insurance in Virginia declined from 82 percent in 2000 to about 75 percent in 2011.

Researchers say factors like decreases in overall employment and rising premium costs contributed to the declines.

The report was prepared by researchers at the University of Minnesota's State Health Access Data Assistance Center.
