Judge clears way for execution

A condemned Virginia inmate will be executed next week after fighting his former attorney for the right to be executed.

A U.S. District judge ruled late Thursday against Robert Gleason's former attorneys who claimed he was not competent to waive his appeals.

The attorneys asked the judge to reappoint them to the case, saying Gleason's condition has gotten worse because of his solitary confinement on death row.

Gleason was sentenced to death after authorities say he killed two fellow inmates at two separate prisons in Wise County, Virginia.

He is scheduled to be executed Wednesday.
