Kilgore encourages blood donations

Daniel Kilgore, an offensive lineman for the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers, will visit Marsh Regional Blood Center on Thursday, March 21, from 3-6 p.m. Kilgore will sign autographs and meet with the center’s blood donors.
"Even though Daniel’s moved away, he’s still passionate about helping his home community, and he recognizes that blood donation does that in a major way," said Don Campbell, director of Marsh Regional. "For a young guy who just played in the Super Bowl, this is a really selfless use of his time."
Blood supplies from Marsh Regional stay local in this region, and each donation can save up to three lives. Additionally, donations of plasma can be used to help burn victims and premature babies heal, while platelets are frequently needed by patients with cancer, leukemia, aplastic anemia and other platelet-suppressing diseases.
Kilgore will be at Marsh Regional’s Kingsport office, located at 102 E. Ravine Road. The center will offer light refreshments during his visit, and free T-shirts will be provided to everyone who donates.
Before joining the 49ers in 2011, Kilgore was a 4A all-state honoree and a three-year starter for the Dobyns-Bennett Indians. After graduating, he played for the Appalachian State University Mountaineers, who won two NCAA Football Championship Series national championships during his tenure. And this year, his 49ers earned a trip to the Super Bowl by winning the NFL’s National Football Conference title.
"We know how jam-packed Daniel’s schedule is with the NFL, so we really appreciate him taking the time to come out and visit us," Campbell said. "This is a huge treat for our donors."
To donate blood, individuals must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. People with a cold, sore throat, fever, flu or fever blisters or who are taking antibiotics may not donate. Donors should eat a balanced meal before giving blood.
Donors are also welcome at Marsh Regional’s other collection centers: 1996 W. State St., Bristol; and 1 Professional Park Blvd., Suite 14, Johnson City.
