Appalachian Sustainable Development (ASD) has purchased a shed kit to hold garden supplies and materials, but they don’t have anyone to build the shed.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sylvia Crum at ASD:

The mission of Appalachian Sustainable Development is to create, promote and expand economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible opportunities to help improve the lives and the health of our local communities and ecosystems.
ASD works to educate, advocate and share lessons learned on sustainable development locally, regionally and nationally to advance local and regional food systems.
ASD plans to use the shed to store garden tools, soils, gloves, wheel barrows and more. It will include all the things ASD needs to sow, grow and harvest food for our neighbors in need.
The shed will be ASD’s supply building to hold all the materials for the group’s "Grow your Own" garden project 2013.
“Last year in Washington County VA, we had a "Grow your Own" pilot project and 23 families grew an amazing 8,371 pounds of fresh, healthy produce to feed themselves and a neighbor!” said ASD Communications and Development Director Sylvia Crum. “And the needs are growing. This year we plan to work with 30 families, so we gotta get cracking.”
The shed will be located at Ecumenical Faith in Action in Abingdon, where a few thousand families stop on Mondays and Tuesdays to pick up their food from the food pantry there.
This is also where ASD has their "Grow your Own" training garden.
“We have found that many of the families that are food bank/pantry recipients are also excellent candidates for our "Grow your Own" program,” said Crum. “These folks just need a little encouragement and empowerment to provide for themselves. So families come to get their food and also participate in garden training, tech support classes, as well as pick up their supplies and materials.”
ASD is looking for 10-15 people over a 2-3 day period. No experience is necessary. Please bring your own tools if you have them.
