The Carter County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Monday that the human remains found near Gap Creek Road last Wednesday by road crews are indeed that of a man, believed to be 40 to 45 years old. Click here to read that story.
Sheriff Chris Mathes said investigators found a wallet with identification near the site and believe it belongs to the man, who was listed as missing for two to three months.
Mathes said they are using soil samples to piece together a timeline of the death. "You look at when someone last saw them alive and when you found them dead. That's your window. Then you look at the science and conditions of the body," he said.
The UT Forensics Unit, TBI and Carter County deputies will return to the scene on Tuesday for more testing.
