School grading proposal accepted

Published On: Feb 05 2013 04:56:05 PM CST

Changes are on the way for how schools are graded in Virginia after Governor Bob McDonnell's proposal was approved by the general assembly.

We've learned the proposal to grade schools on an A to F scale barely won approval, with Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling casting the tie-breaking vote in the senate Tuesday. McDonnell says an easy-to-understand grading system will encourage more parental involvement in schools, while Democratic state senators call the measure a gimmick.

We've also learned the house voted to pass a bill allowing the state to take over failing schools, and similar legislation is pending in the senate.
