NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Smartphone users in Tennessee now have another tool available to help them prepare and respond to severe weather and disasters.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency launched the ReadyTN app on Monday for the iPhone and iPad.

The preparedness application offers location-based information including weather alerts, warnings, road conditions, emergency shelters open and local non-emergency government contact information.

Dean Flener, a spokesperson for TEMA, said the app is a way to use technology to prepare people and help them respond when Mother Nature strikes.

"Knowing where they will go and what they will do in case of an emergency. So we hope it's another tool to get ready for the next disaster,” he said.

TEMA launched the application for the Android in February. More than 15,000 people downloaded the app since then.

iPhone and iPad owners simply need to search for ReadyTN in the App Store or in the iTunes Store and then download the application to their devices. The ReadyTN browser landing page in the iTunes Store is http://bit.ly/StqFxU.

TEMA is the first state agency to develop and launch a consumer application that runs on multiple smartphone platforms and devices.
