WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. -

If you're pulled over for not wearing your seat belt, it could hurt your wallet.

Legislation that would increase the fine for not wearing a seat belt is scheduled to be heard by Tennessee lawmakers today.

Currently the penalty for not wearing a seat belt is $10. Under this proposal, the fine would go up to $50.

One local resident tells us she thinks it is a good idea. "I think it's a lot of money for them and a lot of people around here don't have the money but I think it's a good benefit. I think everybody should wear their seat belts; it saves a lot of lives and children's lives," said Rosie Fuller.

The Senate version is to be heard first in the Senate Finance Committee, and the companion bill is scheduled for later in the House Transportation Committee.
