Two charged after early morning shootout

We're told Derrick Kitzmiller, 20 years old, from Gray, Tennessee, was driving the vehicle. He is charged with attempted second degree murder, driving on a suspended license, felony evading, reckless endangerment and speeding.

The passenger and owner of the car, 35-year-old Jennifer Russell of Bristol, Tennessee, is charged with felony altering of a title or registration.

UPDATE (8:55 A.M.): News 5 WCYB has learned more than 14 shots were fired between a Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper and a pursuit suspect this morning along Hog Hollow Road in Washington County, Tennessee. View photos from the scene

The case started as a tailgating complaint along Interstate 81 northbound.

We’ve learned dispatchers received a call at 2:14 a.m. from a person saying they were being tailgated along the Interstate.

Troopers say a pursuit began around Exit 50 norhtbound on Interstate 81 and the chase continued onto Interstate 26 eastbound.  We’re told the suspect then exited onto Eastern Star Road and then turned on to Hog Hollow Road.

We’re told the suspect’s car then crashed along Hog Hollow Road.

According to troopers on the scene, a shootout followed between the suspect and Trooper Jeff Applebea.

We’re told there were at least 14 shots fired between the trooper and the suspect. Troopers say no one was injured.

Two suspects were arrested and taken to the Washington County Detention Center.

There is no word on the connection between the suspect and the initial caller in the tailgating complaint.
