The busiest travel weekend of the year claimed 13 lives in Virginia.

According to preliminary data from Virginia State Police the number is up from from the two previous years.

State police say of the 13-people killed in Thanksgiving holiday traffic crashes three were pedestrians, one was a motorcyclist and two people died in one crash.

The victims ranged in age from 17 to 71 years old.

Police say alcohol was a factor in at least three of the crashes. They say five of the fatalities involved people who were not wearing seatbelts.
