ABINGDON, Va. -

Virginia democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe made a stop in our region Friday morning.

The businessman has been touring community colleges across the commonwealth gathering ideas on ways to strengthen Virginia's economy.

News 5 caught up with McAuliffe as he toured Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon.

McAuliffe told us if elected governor, he wants to invest in secondary education and pour resources into what he called "jobs of the 21st century".

We asked how he would help stimulate the economy here in coal country, especially given recent layoffs with a struggling industry.

"I think it's important that we diversity the economy. We continue with the assets we have, but we're working and thinking about what are our children going to be doing," said McAuliffe.

McAuliffe also said if elected governor, he would like to set up a 'one-stop-shop' agency with resources to help job seekers gain employment.
