WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. -

December 11, 2013 Update at 8:00 p.m.

A two year-old girl is allegedly murdered by her mother's boyfriend in Washington County, Virginia.

Now he is charged with her death.

Leah Dye's life was cut short, just weeks after her 2nd birthday.

"It was the worst thing I've ever gone through in my entire life.  No one's ever prepared to see their little girl laying there unresponsive," says Kayla Dye, the girl's mother.

Washington County, Virginia deputies say Gregory Marlow beat her to death.  Investigators say Leah had a broken spine and torn aorta, and that she bled to death internally.

The case actually goes back to May of 2012 when deputies tell us they got a call about an unresponsive 2 year-old.

They say Marlow had been caring for her inside a Bristol, Virginia apartment when the trauma happened.

Little Leah was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly thereafter.

Between the autopsy and remaining questions, deputies and the Commonwealth's Attorney say they wanted a thorough and complete investigation.

They tell us Marlow's statements don't match up to what the autopsy shows.

"My family and I are extremely happy that he's been arrested," says Dye.

Dye says she wasn't there when the alleged attack happened.  She claims Marlow told her he fell on the toddler.

Leah was later laid to rest with her favorite Elmo in her tiny coffin.

"She was an amazing little girl and she didn't deserve what happened to her, but she definitely does deserve the justice that she's going to get," says Dye.

Marlow is being held in the Southwest Regional Jail without bond.  He's charged with second degree murder.
