State grant applications are being accepted from Virginia localities to support agriculture and forestry.
The fiscal 2014 grants are from the Governor's Agricultural and Forestry Industries Development Fund. The competitive grant program allows localities to apply for up to $20,000 in matching funds. That sum grows to $35,000 for multi-jurisdictional applications.
The grants are aimed at developing strategic plans for agriculture and forestry economic development. This can include zoning ordinances that encourage agriculture or forest-based businesses, or the development of strategic plans.
Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore says the program has generated innovate and thoughtful projects.
Applications for the funding are due Sept. 16. The grants will be announced in October.
