Child abuse is a problem advocates see every day child abuse. We're told it can happen anywhere.
Leaders are hoping to raise awareness of the issue and put an end to it.
Tuesday morning leaders in Sullivan County signed a proclamation declaring April Child Abuse Prevention Month. Three people impacted by child abuse were on hand at Tuesday’s meeting; two of them have written books about their ordeals.
Many of the others in attendance play a role in helping children who've been abused. "Every day, all the time, we see it. Once a month we have a child protective investigative team, [including] the courts, Department of Children's Services, the DA's office, law enforcement and we review all those cases and people would be surprised at how many cases we have each month," explains Michele Steadman, Director of Court Services, Sullivan County Juvenile Court.
There is a child abuse hotline anyone can call to notify authorities of child abuse. It is an anonymous hotline, so you don't have to include any of your information. The number to call is 1-877-542-ABUSE.
