Back-To-School Shots
SULLIVAN CO, Tenn. -

The race is on for parents to get their children vaccinated before school begins next month.

We learned Tennessee residents are required to have vaccines before entering child care, kindergarten, seventh grade, and before enrolling in a Tennessee school for the first time.

Sullivan County's Regional Health Director Dr. Stephen May tells us that children have been turned away from school on the first day because they lacked immunization certificates. "It's important that you start now getting your school immunizations so you aren't caught in the mad scramble that takes place on the first day of school," says May.

Vaccines required for school are available from many health care providers including county health departments.

Vaccines required for children enrolling in childcare: DTaP/DT, IPV/OPV, MMR, Varicella, Hib, HBV, PCV, Hepatitis A

Vaccines required for children enrolling in Kindergarten: DTaP/DT, HBV, MMR, IPV/OPV, Varicella, Hepatitis A

All children entering 7th grade: Tdap

Children who are new enrollees in a TN school other than Kindergarten or 7th grade: DTap/DT, MMR, IPV/OPV, Varicella, HBV
