Blue mold threatens local tobacco crops

ABINGDON, Va. -

Blue mold, an airborne infection that destroys tobacco leaves, is threatening crops in our region for the first time in years.

Farmers are unsure where the mold began, but Agricultural Agent Phil Blevins tells us it can destroy more than half of tobacco crops.

"We found blue mold this past week in a crop here in Abingdon. It's a pretty active case but it just depends on what the weather does," says Blevins.

He tells us this outbreak will have no impact on tobacco consumers and will not be a health hazard.
