CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -

Bracelets that can tell when the wearer drinks alcohol are helping to protect the public while allowing some multiple-DUI offenders to remain out of jail before trial.

Reports said a change in state law in 2010 directed judges to consider multiple-DUI offenders a public risk. Since then, pre-trial alcohol monitoring has become increasingly popular.

In pre-trial use, the bracelet is can be a condition of release, but judges have to evaluate whether the monitoring device is necessary for public safety and whether it addresses any danger presented by the defendant.

The bracelets can also have an unintended benefit. Some wearers say the bracelets have helped them to quit drinking after years of trying to quit on their own.
