Community college faculty benefits

According to the Associated Press, many adjunct instructors at Virginia's 23 community colleges will see their hours cut starting this summer, a move the state is taking to avoid paying health benefits for part-time workers under new federal health reforms.

In February, Gov. Bob McDonnell limited all part-time state workers to no more than 29 hours weekly. The state would have to provide health benefits for those working 30 hours or more.

The directive is about to hammer many community college adjunct faculty who teach huge course loads of 45 credit hours or more to make ends meet. Some will see their hours and pay trimmed by nearly half.

As contract workers, the 9,100 adjunct faculty members at Virginia's 23 community colleges get no health benefits. But they teach at least three-fifths of the courses.
