The County Health Rankings and Roadmaps Survey drills down the numbers when it comes to ranking counties based upon health factors.

There are four categories of health factors measured in the study. Those factors include: health behaviors such as tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse among others; clinical care that is measured in terms of access and quality; social and economic factors that include employment and community safety; and physical environment, which includes air and water quality, as well as housing.

Those criteria were uniformly applied to all states, and this is how they affected county rankings in our area.

Out of the 95 counties ranked in Tennessee, Washington County ranked fifth overall, followed by Sullivan, Unicoi, Hawkins, Carter and Johnson counties -- all within the top 50. Greene County ranked 55th

In Virginia. 133 counties and cities were ranked. Washington County ranked highest in our viewing area at 57.

Smyth County was next at 101 followed by Scott County at 102, Bristol City at 109, and then Russell, Lee, Dickenson, Buchanan and Wise counties.
