EMORY, Va. -

Throughout the country bells rang to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the march on Washington.

Emory & Henry College also commemorated the historic event. Students, faculty and staff not only came together to remember the march, but they pledged to march for new causes.

Wednesday's ceremony included the playing of the "I Have a Dream" speech.

Organizers says that it's important for educational institutions to talk about how they can achieve their own dreams as well as the dream of Dr. King. "This serves as a good way to bring people together to talk about the promise of the American society as well as the challenges that still face us," said associate professor and department chair Julia Wilson.

Wednesday was the first day of school for Emory & Henry students.
