Fluid spill caused slick streets in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

There's a warning for Johnson City drivers after a dangerous spill Monday evening -- the Johnson City Fire Department spent the evening cleaning up a slippery mess.

Fire crews say hydraulics fluid spilled onto Highway 36 between Boones Creek Road and Gray Station Road.

News 5 learned it happened when a pick-up truck was pulling out onto the road and the containers fell out of the truck's bed.

Lieutenant Jason Powell says they estimate 20 to 25 gallons of the slippery liquid spilled onto the roads. "It was just after it had rained, so it was spread out pretty good across the roadway.  We've been working here to get some oil dry down and get it to be not as slick," said Powers.

The road has been reopened and drivers are urged to be careful.

Lieutenant Powell says when the rain mixes with the oil, it can make the roads as slick as black ice.
