William Casey

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

Attorneys for a former Knoxville priest convicted of child rape in Sullivan County, Tennessee are fighting to appeal his conviction.

William Casey was convicted in 2011 of criminal sexual conduct of Warren Tucker in a case that dated back to the 1970s.

Casey's defense team argues before the Tennessee Court of Appeals judge Tuesday, asking them to dismiss Casey's conviction.

His lawyers argued they should be overturned because, they say, 30 years was too much time between the crime and the trial.

The hearing was attended by both supporters of the former priest and SNAP, a group that supports people abused by priests.

The judges did not make a decision yet. Court adjourned until August 20.
