Injured Virginia State Trooper recovering at rehabilitation center

ATLANTA, Ga. -

Virginia State Trooper James Lawson sustained a spinal cord injury during a car accident in the line of duty back on April 9.

The Gate City, Virginia police officer was rushed to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia for inpatient rehabilitation.

We've learned he is now able to walk short distances while using a nerve-stimulating device. Doctors say his walking has been more limited recently because of pain in his left leg as his recovery has progressed.

"Officer Lawson is recovering well despite this setback. He has a great spirit and been working hard in therapy. We look forward to seeing him walk more in the future," said Doctor Anna Elmers.

Doctors say Trooper Lawson will discharge from the Shepherd Center's inpatient rehabilitation program on May 20th. He'll continue recovering with the hospital's day treatment program.

We've learned a fund has been created at New Peoples Bank in the Tri-State area to help offset medical expenses.

Weber City and Gate City, Virginia Police Departments are hosting a motorcycle ride fundraiser on Sunday June 2nd. The ride through Scott County will start and end in the parking lot of Gate City High School. Riders will sell raffle tickets along their route and all proceeds will go to help the Lawson family pay for medical expenses.
