Janie Hammit Home Discontinues Services

A former orphanage in Bristol, Virginia has decided to discontinue services.
The board of directors decided last week to discontinue residential services in search for a new direction for the Janie Hammit Home. The decline in their residential population was the reason.
The 18-bed facility gave up on residential service last fall and has been in operation for decades. Board members tell us that the state is now placing more children in foster homes, and that made the decision difficult. "So much of what we see in what we call modern times leads to an unhappy decision that's based on finances rather than based on desire to serve," board member John Kieffer said.
Since the board is a nonprofit endowment fund, they are working on details for a scholarship program for needy children.
