Knox County could spend up to $5 million purchasing and renovating a building to replace the Knox County Medical Examiner's Office.
Mayor Tom Burchett told the Knoxville News Sentinel that state funding would help the county renovate the 1,800-square foot facility, which would be purchased for $1 million with $3 million to $4 million in renovations expected.
The future location of the state-required office has been in question since county officials learned recently they must find a new location and move out of the University of Tennessee Medical Center before December 2014.
The medical examiner's regional office handles a 22-county area. In September, Burchett and Knox County Finance Director Chris Caldwell met with Gov. Bill Haslam in Nashville to ask for up to $10 million for a regional office.
