JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

The latest retail sales report for the Tri-Cities show sales dropped across the first quarter of the year.

The numbers were released this morning by ETSU’s Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

Bristol took the biggest hit, after two years of the strongest growth retail sales in Bristol dropped 6.5 percent.

Sales have dropped in Kingsport for two straight quarters and this make three straight quarterly declines in Johnson City.

Sales volume is also down across the Tri-Cities by almost 5 percent.

The rest of the state saw sales slip by less than a percent in the first quarter, meanwhile the retail activity picked up across the nation.

Experts say the report could signal the end of the retail growth, which has been a bright spot in the overall recession recovery.
