RICHMOND, Va. -

A state law enforcement agency and 18 local police and sheriffs offices have received $4.2 million for training.

The money comes from the $1.5 billion Abbott Laboratories agreed to pay to federal and state governments to settle allegations that it promoted the drug Depakote for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It will be used for training to help police better respond to crisis situations involving people with mental illnesses.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli presented checks to the agencies at a news conference Wednesday. The Department of Criminal Justice Services received the largest grant, $800,000, to provide training for localities that don't have their own crisis intervention teams.
