Local dietitician weighs in on food label change
A local nutritionist is weighing in on changes to food nutrition labels.
The Food and Drug Administration will let food companies, health care professionals, and shoppers comment before making any permanent rules.
The proposal makes calorie counts more prominent and breaks down which sugars are natural or added. Local dietitian Audrey Kessler tells us current labels may be too confusing to help you eat healthy.
She says, "I think this is a step in the right direction as a means of increasing awareness among Americans and ultimately possibly helping to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic illness."
The FDA believes it will cost those companies a total of about $2 billion to revise the labels.
