A local high school marching band has been chosen to participate in the Rose Parade for its third time.
The Dobyns-Bennett marching band previously marched in Pasadena, California in 2007. The school was also selected in 2002.
The Tournament of Roses Association, which puts on the Rose Bowl game and the Rose Parade, says they receive more than 100 applications each year and only 12 high school bands get invited.
We spoke to the association's president, Scott Jenkins, at a breakfast in Kingsport this morning. He says a lot goes into making the selections. "You guys here in this town had, we think, one of the very best applications," said Jenkins. "We grade them on musicianship, marching ability, entertainment, showmanship of all sorts."
Jenkins says he's in town to help Kingsport school and city leaders raise awareness about the Dobyns-Bennett marching band's success. He says he also hopes it will help them bring in donations to help pay expenses for the trip to California.
The Rose Parade is the morning of January 1st, beginning at 8 a.m. PST, followed by the Rose Bowl at 2 p.m.
