"Low Tax" Looper dies in prison
A one-time Tennessee state Senate candidate convicted of killing his opposition has been found dead in prison.
Byron Looper, a former Putnam County property assessor, was found in his cell at the Morgan County Correctional Complex Wednesday morning.
Looper, 48, was serving a life sentence there for the 1998 shooting of state Senator Tommy Burks. Burks, a very popular politician from Cumberland County, was shot to death while sitting in his pickup near his farm.
During his campaign against Burks, Looper legally changed his middle name to "Low Tax", hoping it would win him votes.
The TBI is investigating Looper’s death.
