JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

Local motorcycle riders took to the mountain roads recently, raising nearly $10,000.  The event was the annual 'Hope on Wheels' motorcycle ride benefiting cancer patients.

The event was put on by the Mountain States Foundation.  In a press release, the organization says 49 bikes raised $9,770 to provide assistance for patients at the Mountain States Health Alliance Regional Cancer Centers. They say this benefits the Circle of Hope program which assists cancer patients with needs such as gas vouchers, prescription assistance, and much more.

The 73-mile ride took about 2 hours.  It started in Johnson City, and took riders through Unicoi County, over Spivey Mountain into North Carolina and along the Nolichucky River.  They also rolled through Indian Grave Gap... past Rock Creek and into the town of Unicoi before returning to Johnson City.
