Investigators are revealing more about the stabbing Tuesday at South Greene High School.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -

Investigators are revealing more about the stabbing Tuesday at South Greene High School.

They tell us the victim is 15-year old Daniel Birchfield. They say he's still in the hospital in stable condition.

The school is coming together as Daniel recovers. There was a prayer service at their flagpole Wednesday morning; hundreds of students attended.

Just before 8 a.m. Tuesday, the Greene County Sheriff's Office says a 16-year-old boy walked up to Daniel while he was sitting at a table inside the school and stabbed him in the back.

The principal tells us another student intervened when she saw the attack. "She is remarkable. That's our word for her. She was a hero and she prevented probably any more damage than what's done," says Cindy Bowman, the principal at South Greene High School.

The district attorney says the motive was a fight over a girl.

The alleged attacker, whose name isn't being released because of his age, is charged with attempted first degree murder.

Chris Brobek's cousin is good friends with Daniel and was with him when he was stabbed. "[The girl who intervened] was standing right from me to you when it happened. The last time I talked to her, she was pretty torn up about it because he was her friend," says Brobek.

At this morning's prayer service, Daniel sent a special saying from his hospital room for his teacher to read. "The teacher that went up with him brought a message to our faculty and that is one of forgiveness," says Bowman.
