New construction at Virginia Tech tops $1B since 1999

BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech has undergone a construction boom since Charles Steger became president in 1999.

Construction projects either completed or underway since then have topped $1 billion.

Steger tells The Roanoke Times (http://bit.ly/ZPP3S7 ) that university officials don't intend to slow down.

He says the pursuit of research funding and technology-related changes in education have driven the projects.

The use of new technology in education requires new buildings. Steger says a lack of enough electrical outlets in classrooms is one of Virginia Tech's biggest problems.

The university also needs space for faculty and scientists to work.
