Flashing school zone signs will be turning on again over the next week or across our region.

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. -

Sullivan County students head back to class next week, and drivers will need to pay extra attention.

That's because there's a new school zone on Highway 11-W this year.

The project was just completed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation at the request of county officials.

Sullivan County mayor Steve Godsey told News 5 the added school zone flashing light and turn lane will make students and drivers safer. "We've had several complaints of near accidents with school bus involvement with traffic moving at such a rapid pace. The speed limit over there is 50 miles an hour, and when you top the hill there's a school zone," Godsey said.

TDOT officials said they are in the design phases of a similar project to be completed outside of Sullivan East High School.
