GATE CITY, Va. -

A local corrections officer has been fired after he is arrested twice in the same day.

Friday evening officers in Gate City, Virginia arrested 51-year-old Jeffery Mathes for DUI. We're told Mathes bonded out of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail around 8:30 Friday evening.

About an hour later deputies in Sullivan County stopped Mathes on Wadlow Gap Road in Kingsport for speeding. Sullivan County deputies say they smelled alcohol and Mathes was arrested again for driving under the influence.

Mathes spent Friday night in the Sullivan County Jail before posting bond  Saturday morning.

He now faces charges for DUI and speeding.

Mathes worked as a correctional officer in Sullivan County for five years, but as of Saturday evening we're told Mathes is no longer employed by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office.
