One person is dead after an apartment fire in Washington County, Tennessee.
Sheriff Ed Graybeal tells us the fire happened just after 4 a.m. Saturday at an apartment building on Old State Route 34 in Limestone.
We're told when fire crews arrived the building was covered in flames. Sheriff Graybeal tells us firefighters found a body in the basement apartment during the incident.
Sheriff's deputies tell us the victim is a woman who lived in the lower apartment in the building.
We're told she was the only person in the home.
The identity of the victim will not be released until the body can be identified. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
A Tennessee State Fire Marshal is leading the investigation but an arson investigator from the Washington County Sheriff's Department is assisting.
Sheriff's deputies told News 5 they rarely see fatal fires. "We don't have a lot of them in Washington County," said Lt. Edwin Graybeal. "A lot of times when we do, it turns out it's because there's no fire alarms, things like that, where people don't know there's a fire in their home until its too late."
