ROANOKE, Va. -

Botetourt County authorities have identified a man who died after he fell into a rain-swollen culvert near his home.

The sheriff's office tells media outlets that 42-year-old Craig Ricker of Buchanan was trying to clear debris from the culvert when the accident occurred early Thursday morning.

Heavy rains Wednesday night spawned flooding across Southwest Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says 65 roads are closed. Crews are working to clean up mud slides, repair flood damage and remove downed trees.

Salem city spokesman Mike Stevens says two mobile home parks were evacuated Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service says the region received 2 to 5 inches of rain during a 24-hour period ending Thursday morning.
