Bristol, Tennessee's Holston View School was in need of a new outdoor classroom and now they have more than just a classroom outdoors.
Ground was broken for a solar pavilion on the schools campus that will double as an energy-producing grid of solar power and learning.
When completed, it will produce 50,000 watts of power that will be fed back into the TVA grid.
"200 solar panels on racing that will be an outdoor classroom. We'll have tables, picnic tables underneath for students to sit in. We will have stamped concrete with educational programs eventually there as well," Pete Morenings with Ecological Energy Systems said.
The classroom will serve as a potential model for school site solar electric development and will provide students a chance to earn college credit in solar technology from Virginia Highlands Community College.
