Vigils where held at two local schools Thursday night.

GLADE SPRING, Va. -

17-year-old Griffin Palmer died in Tuesday's shooting in Glade Spring, Virginia. He was a rising junior at Patrick Henry High School in Washington County, Virginia.

Students and staff gathered in his honor on Thursday. Most of the people at school wore purple, a color symbolizing domestic violence awareness, as a sign of their resilience.

They tell us they want to raise awareness about domestic violence, which took Griffin Palmer from them too soon.

The principal at Patrick Henry tells us Palmer was upbeat, always had a smile on his face, and was always surrounded by friends.

Palmer's classmates tell us that's made it even more difficult to be at school this week. "It's been really quiet here lately," classmate Kent Kestner said. "It's been hard to come to school knowing he's not here. I had a lot of classes with him. I used to walk class to class with him everyday. It's hard knowing that he's not here."

Kester said Palmer liked to sing and play guitar. He was on the football team. One of his trademarks, students say, was the bandana he always wore, a look that many of his classmates wore in his honor Thursday.

Kestner says if you didn't know Palmer well, you'd never know what he dealt with at home because he always wore a smile on his face and always tried to make everyone laugh.
