The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the resignation of Virginia State Senator Phil Puckett.
Puckett chose to leave office June 9th before his term expired
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the D.O.J. is looking into his resignation, including allegations he was considering a job with the state tobacco commission.
The article also claims he wanted to remove republican opposition to his daughter's pending appointment to the bench in southwest Virginia.
Anonymous sources told the Times-Dispatch that representatives of the FBI and United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia have been conducting interviews, including with elected officials who may have knowledge of the chain of events.
One source said a grand jury will convene in Abingdon next week to hear testimony on the matter.
We reached out to Puckett for comment but we were unable to reach him.
