Unicoi County schools will receive $3 million after a sinkhole forced school officials to close Love Chapel Elementary.
The school board members voted to accept the insurance settlement in a meeting Monday night.
The board plans to lease 12 modular units next to Unicoi County High School as a temporary location for Love Chapel Elementary.
School board director Denise Brown told News 5 they are exhausting every angle to build a new Love Chapel Elementary. "We have approached the federal government and the state. We had a meeting with Governor Haslam two weeks ago trying to get some financial assistance from the federal government or the state government," said Brown.
School board member Lisa White also commented on the settlement. "I want to do what's best for the staff and protect them. I want the parents to know that when they take their children to school, they are not going to have to worry if something is going to happen to their children," she said.
The school board plans to lease the modular units for three years during the transition period.
