Sheriff gives new details about shooting, chase

JUNE 13: Police chased Mabe and another man to this gas station, where he is said to have carjacked a Honda.

MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. -

Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece released more information about the chase that ended in the arrest of two men, one of whom was wanted by the TBI in connection to a double shooting early this week.

The following is the full press release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office:

"On June 13, 2013 at approximately 11:45 a.m. a 911 call was received from a Mountain City citizen stating that Richard Shane Mabe, who was currently wanted by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for 2 Counts of Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, was a passenger in a vehicle at the McDonald's Restaurant on Highway 421 in Mountain City, Tennessee.

Mountain City Police Department, along with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, were dispatched to this location. The Mountain City Police officers made contact with the vehicle on Highway 421. There were 2 Male subjects in the vehicle.

The vehicle turned onto Divide Road, at which time the Mountain City Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop. The Mountain City Police Department then pursued the vehicle outside of the City, traveling on Divide Road.

At this time the passenger in the vehicle was identified to be Richard Shane Mabe. Mr. Mabe fired several rounds towards the Mountain City Police Department, striking one vehicle.

There was a Johnson County Sheriff's Office vehicle stationary at Dry Stone Branch Road at the intersection of Divide Road with Deputy Sheriff Mark Gladden and Deputy Sheriff Jon Stout. Both Officers were located outside of the vehicle when Richard Shane Mabe fired shots at the 2 deputies. The Johnson County officers returned fire.

The vehicle then proceeded to turn onto Highway 91 North and entered into the parking lot of the Quick Stop located on Highway 91. Both male subjects exited the vehicle with weapons in hand; they then carjacked a car located at the gas pumps. At this time Mr. Mabe became the driver of the stolen vehicle, leaving the parking lot, turning North onto Highway 91.

Investigator Cole Gladden then made contact with Mr. Mabe's vehicle with her vehicle. At this point, Deputy Sheriff Mark Gladden came in behind Mr. Mabe with the vehicle he was driving and made contact with the subject's vehicle once again, this time forcing Mr. Mabe from the roadway over an embankment, where the vehicle came to rest.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office along with THP then surrounded the vehicle and took both male subjects into custody. Both males were transported to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Mabe was also taken to Mountain City Medical Center, where he received treatment for a laceration on his arm.

Both subjects are currently being held at the Johnson County Jail on the following charges:

Richard Shane Mabe, Age 33 of Mountain City, Tennessee has 4 Counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder on Police Officers, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon, Carjacking, and Evading Arrest.

Timothy Lee Greer, Age 29 of Creston, North Carolina is charged with 4 Counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder on Police Officers, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon, Carjacking, Evading Arrest, and 1 Count of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer."
